How natural gas prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

US shale gas is the dominant supply

The US is the world's largest natural gas producer, with the Marcellus, Haynesville, and Permian (associated gas) the largest basins. Production is responsive to prices on quarterly timescales. LNG export capacity has grown substantially and now links US prices more closely to global gas markets. Pipeline takeaway capacity is a recurring constraint.

EIA natural gas data
Demand

Power generation, heating, and LNG exports drive demand

US gas demand splits roughly: 40% electric power generation, 30% industrial, 20% residential/commercial heating, and 10%+ LNG export feedgas. Power demand has summer cooling peaks and winter heating peaks. LNG exports run year-round near capacity. Coal-to-gas switching in power generation is highly responsive to gas prices.

EIA Natural Gas Weekly
Policy and macro

Storage, weather, and LNG capacity are the swing factors

Weekly EIA storage report (Thursday 10:30 ET) is the single most market-moving data release. Heating degree days (winter) and cooling degree days (summer) drive seasonal demand spikes. Pause in LNG export approvals, pipeline approvals, and Permian gas takeaway are recurring policy and infrastructure factors.

EIA Weekly Storage Report

Key market data

Natural Gas fundamentals

US Working Gas Storage
EIA weekly

Weekly EIA storage data is the primary short-term price driver. Storage relative to the 5-year average determines the seasonal price premium or discount. Storage below the 5-year average is bullish; above is bearish.

US Dry Gas Production
~105 Bcf/d

The US produces roughly 105 Bcf/d of dry natural gas, making it the world's largest producer. Marcellus (Appalachia), Haynesville (LA/TX), and Permian Basin associated gas are the top three producing regions.

EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook
LNG Export Capacity
~14 Bcf/d

Sabine Pass, Corpus Christi, Cameron, Freeport, Elba Island, and Calcasieu Pass collectively ~14 Bcf/d of US LNG export capacity. Cheniere CCL Stage 3 Trains 1-5 reached commercial operation by March 2026; Trains 6-7 expected end of 2026.

Henry Hub vs TTF Spread
See prices

Henry Hub (US) and TTF (European) prices track each other more closely now that US LNG exports link the two markets. When TTF significantly exceeds Henry Hub on an LNG-equivalent basis, US LNG exports run near maximum capacity.

Heating/Cooling Degree Days
Seasonal

Heating degree days (HDD) in winter and cooling degree days (CDD) in summer are the primary near-term demand signals. NOAA 6-10 and 8-14 day weather outlooks move the front-month contract meaningfully.

NOAA Climate Prediction Center
Price Volatility (90-day)
~55%

Natural gas is one of the most volatile commodity markets. Weather misses, storage surprises, and unexpected LNG outages can move the front-month contract 10-20% in a single session.
