How lithium prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Brine, hard rock, and emerging direct-extraction technologies

Lithium supply comes from two main sources: brine operations in the South American Lithium Triangle (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia) and hard-rock spodumene mining (Australia, China). Direct lithium extraction (DLE) is an emerging technology that could expand brine supply meaningfully. Top producers include Albemarle, SQM, Tianqi, and Pilbara Minerals. A massive Chinese production ramp from 2022 to 2025 created the current structural oversupply.

USGS lithium statistics
Demand

EV batteries are over 80% of lithium demand

EV battery demand drives roughly 80%+ of lithium consumption, with energy storage (grid-scale batteries) the second-largest segment. Demand is highly sensitive to BEV adoption rates in major markets (China, EU, US). Cathode chemistry mix matters: LFP uses 30% less lithium per kWh than NMC, but is the dominant chemistry in China and growing globally.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
Policy and macro

Boom-bust supply cycles dominate

The 2021-2022 spike to $80,000/t LCE triggered a massive supply response. By 2024-2025 the price collapsed to $10,000-14,000/t as Chinese lepidolite and spodumene production overwhelmed demand growth. The current question is when demand growth from EV adoption catches up to supply. Chinese government quotas, Chilean brine royalty negotiations, and Rio Tinto's Arcadium integration are the key policy watchpoints.

Key market data

Lithium fundamentals

Annual Mine Supply
~1.1M t LCE

Australia (spodumene) ~45%, Chile (brine) ~25%, China (lepidolite + brine) ~20%. Rio Tinto-Arcadium integration (closed March 2025) now the largest single producer.

USGS · Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
Annual Demand
~900K t LCE

EV batteries ~80-85%, energy storage systems (ESS) ~10%, industrial and other ~5-10%. China represents ~65% of global lithium demand through its battery supply chain.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence · Annual
LFP Battery Share
~65%

LFP (lithium iron phosphate, cobalt-free) has overtaken NMC in China and is growing in the West. LFP uses less lithium per kWh but more total cells; the chemistry shift creates a mixed impact on lithium demand.

SNE Research · Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
vs 2022 Peak
-85%

Lithium carbonate peaked at ~$80,000/t LCE in November 2022. The collapse to current levels reflects a structural supply surplus driven by Chinese lepidolite and Australian spodumene ramps that outpaced EV demand growth.

Fastmarkets · Historical
Rio-Arcadium Deal
$6.7B

Rio Tinto acquired Arcadium Lithium (Livent + Allkem merger) for $6.7B, closed March 6, 2025. Creates the second-largest lithium company globally behind Albemarle. Includes Rincon (Argentina), Nemaska (Quebec), Galaxy (Australia).

Company announcement · March 2025
Price Volatility (90-day)
~42%

Extreme volatility relative to other commodities. Thin OTC market, no exchange anchor, and Chinese domestic price discovery creates large swings. The 2022 peak-to-trough move was one of the largest in commodity history.
