How tin prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Indonesia + Myanmar disruptions tightened the market in 2024-2026

Indonesia (PT Timah dominant) and Myanmar (Wa State) together supply ~55% of global tin. Indonesia's sweeping crackdown on illegal Bangka Belitung mining in 2024 cut official exports 33% to 46kt; 2025 quota 53kt, 2026 quota 60kt. Myanmar's Wa State Man Maw mine was largely offline since February 2024 ban, with slow resumption. Combined, these disruptions drove LME tin to historically low inventory levels and steep backwardation in late 2025.

ITA · Indonesia AETI
Demand

Electronics solder is the dominant demand driver

Solder for electronics (~50% of demand) is the primary use, making tin sensitive to semiconductor and consumer electronics cycles. AI data center and automotive electronics growth add incremental demand. Tinplate (food/beverage cans) ~15%, PVC stabilizer chemicals ~15%, alloys and other ~20%. Lead-free solder regulations (EU RoHS, US equivalent) increased tin content in solder per joint, adding structural demand support.

International Tin Association (ITA)
Policy and macro

Indonesian quota policy and Alphamin's Bisie restart are the supply pivots

Indonesia's annual AETI quota sets the global supply baseline. Alphamin's Bisie mine (DRC) produces 6,000-7,000t/yr at world-record grade and AISC of ~$18k/t; it is the only major new mine in years. The Myanmar resumption from its ban has been slower than expected due to equipment and logistics issues. LME warrant stocks were at 3,700t in late 2025, historically low.

Key market data

Tin fundamentals

Annual Demand
~400kt

Solder ~50%, tinplate ~15%, chemicals (PVC stabilizers) ~15%, alloys ~10%, other ~10%. Small market relative to copper or aluminum, making it highly sensitive to single-country supply disruptions.

International Tin Association (ITA)
Annual Mine Supply
~370kt

China ~30%, Indonesia ~20%, Myanmar ~12%, Peru ~10%, DRC (Alphamin) ~6%, Bolivia ~5%, Brazil ~4%, other ~13%. The concentration in Indonesia and Myanmar creates periodic supply shocks.

USGS · ITA
Indonesia + Myanmar Share
~55%

Indonesia and Myanmar together supply roughly 55% of global tin mine output. Both have faced significant supply disruptions in 2024-2025: Indonesia from illegal mining crackdowns, Myanmar from the Wa State mining ban. These disruptions are the primary reason for the 2025-2026 tin price rally.

USGS · Indonesia AETI
LME Inventory
~3,700t

LME warranted tin stocks reached historically low levels (~3,700t) in late 2025, driving backwardation (spot premium to forward). Low inventory is a bullish signal indicating physical tightness.

LME daily reports
Market Size
Smallest LME metal

At ~400kt/yr demand, tin is the smallest of the base-metal LME contracts. This means single-country supply disruptions or single large consumer draws can move prices significantly, creating higher volatility than larger metals like aluminum or copper.

ITA · Wood Mackenzie
Price Volatility (90-day)
~38%

High volatility relative to base metals due to small market size and concentrated supply. The January 2026 spike to $58,860/t (followed by ~20% correction) illustrates the market's sensitivity to supply news.
