Titanium price today: live

Snapshot · Periodic reference

Titanium feedstock (ilmenite, rutile) is priced via Argus and TZMI OTC assessments. The titanium market has two distinct segments: TiO2 pigment (~95% of feedstock use, for paint and plastics) and titanium metal sponge (~5%, for aerospace and medical). Boeing 787 uses ~15% titanium by weight. VSMPO-AVISMA (Russia) was historically the largest Ti metal supplier; Western aerospace is actively diversifying away post-2022 sanctions.

How titanium prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Mineral sands (ilmenite/rutile) from Australia, Africa, and India

Titanium feedstock comes from mineral sands operations mining ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene. Australia (~25%), South Africa (~20%), Mozambique (~12%), Kenya (~8%), India (~7%), Ukraine (~7%, disrupted by war), Madagascar (~6%), others. Tronox operates globally; Iluka is the largest rutile producer. Titanium metal sponge is produced from feedstock via the Kroll process in Japan, Kazakhstan, China, the US (ATI, TIMET), and Russia (VSMPO).

TZMI · Argus · USGS
Demand

TiO2 pigment is 95%; aerospace Ti metal is high-value niche

TiO2 pigment (paint, plastics, paper coatings) uses roughly 95% of titanium feedstock and drives the bulk of feedstock pricing. Ti metal (sponge, ingot, mill products) is a high-value niche used in aerospace (Boeing, Airbus), defense (F-35, naval vessels), medical implants, and chemical process equipment. Demand for Ti metal correlates with commercial aircraft build rates and defense spending.

TZMI · Boeing Commercial Airplanes
Policy and macro

Aerospace reshoring from Russian VSMPO is the structural shift

VSMPO-AVISMA (Russia) was historically 35-40% of global commercial aerospace titanium supply. Following 2022 sanctions, Boeing and Airbus accelerated diversification to ATI (US), TIMET (US), Toho Titanium (Japan), and Kazatomprom (Kazakhstan). This reshoring is adding structural demand for non-Russian Ti metal producers over the 2022-2026 period.

Key market data

Titanium fundamentals

Aerospace Ti Metal Use
~10-15% of demand

Ti metal accounts for only 5% of titanium feedstock by weight, but is far higher in value. Aerospace is 60-70% of Ti metal demand. Boeing 787 uses ~15% titanium by weight (roughly 136 tonnes per aircraft), the highest of any commercial jetliner.

TZMI · Boeing
Critical Mineral Status
US + EU Listed

On US USGS Critical Minerals List and EU CRMA. Defense importance (F-35, naval titanium) and dependence on Russian VSMPO (now being reshored) are the primary reasons for criticality designation.

USGS · EU CRMA
TiO2 vs Ti Metal Split
95% TiO2 / 5% Metal

~95% of titanium ore goes to TiO2 pigment production (paint, paper, plastics). Only ~5% is processed into Ti metal sponge for aerospace, medical, and industrial applications. The two markets operate largely independently.

TZMI
Largest Producer Countries
Australia + S. Africa

Australia and South Africa together account for ~45% of global mineral sands (ilmenite, rutile) production. Mozambique, India, Kenya, and Madagascar are also significant. Ukraine was a major ilmenite producer before the 2022 war.

USGS
Global Ti Ore Production
~9M t ilmenite equiv.

Annual ilmenite-equivalent production approximately 9 million tonnes. Rutile (higher purity, 96% TiO2 vs ilmenite 45-65% TiO2) commands a premium and is more scarce.

USGS
Feedstock Volatility
~20%

Ilmenite and rutile have moderate volatility, driven by TiO2 pigment demand cycles. Ti metal prices are much more stable (long-term aerospace contracts) but subject to step-changes when VSMPO supply disruptions occur.
