Graphite price today: live

Snapshot · Coming soon

Graphite is the dominant anode material in lithium-ion batteries. No public exchange-traded futures. Prices referenced from Fastmarkets, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, and Asian Metal. China produces ~65% of natural flake graphite mined globally and dominates spherical anode processing (~90%). US Section 301 tariffs on Chinese anodes and China export licensing (Dec 2023) are the key policy drivers.

How graphite prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

China mines 65% and processes 90% of battery-grade graphite

China dominates both natural flake graphite mining (~65% of global output) and the downstream processing of spheronized, purified anode material (~85-90%). China imposed export licensing requirements on graphite in December 2023. Mozambique (Syrah Balama), Madagascar, Brazil, and Tanzania are the largest non-China mining sources. Western anode processing is essentially a greenfield industry.

USGS · Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
Demand

EV batteries drive 80%+ of graphite demand

Battery anodes account for roughly 80%+ of graphite demand and this share is growing rapidly. A typical EV battery contains 50-100 kg of graphite, roughly twice the cathode mineral mass. The processing requirement (spheronization, purification, coating) adds significant value. Traditional markets (steelmaking, refractories, lubricants) are approximately 20% of demand.

Policy and macro

US tariffs and IRA FEOC rules are reshoring the anode supply chain

US Section 301 tariffs of 25%+ on Chinese graphite and anode materials, combined with IRA rules excluding FEOC (Foreign Entity of Concern) materials from EV tax credits, are creating a structural premium for Western-sourced anode material. The result: a wave of investment in North American and European anode processing facilities backed by DOE, DOD, and IRA funding.

Graphite fundamentals

Battery Demand Share
~80%

Battery anode demand accounts for roughly 80%+ of total graphite consumption and is growing rapidly with EV adoption. The balance is refractory, steelmaking, lubricants, and industrial uses.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence · Fastmarkets
China Processing Share
~90%

China processes roughly 85-90% of natural graphite into battery-grade spherical anode material. Even graphite mined in Mozambique or Madagascar typically ships to China for processing. This processing bottleneck is the strategic vulnerability Western battery makers are trying to address.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
Critical Mineral Status
US + EU Listed

Graphite is on both the US USGS Critical Minerals List and the EU Critical Raw Materials list, reflecting its strategic importance for the energy transition. The FEOC rules under the US IRA directly target Chinese graphite supply chains.

USGS · EU CRMA
Western Anode Capacity
Building

Western anode production capacity is essentially zero today but growing rapidly: Nouveau Monde (Quebec), Syrah Vidalia (Louisiana), Westwater Resources (Alabama), Talga (Sweden) all have active projects backed by government funding.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence anode capacity tracker
Global Flake Production
~1.1M t/yr

Annual natural flake graphite production is approximately 1.1 million tonnes. China ~65%, Mozambique ~10%, Madagascar ~8%, Brazil ~5%, Tanzania ~3%, other ~9%. Synthetic graphite adds another 400-500kt from petroleum coke and coal-tar pitch.

USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries
US Tariff Status
25%+

Section 301 tariffs on Chinese-origin graphite and battery anodes. Combined with IRA FEOC rules, these create strong incentives for domestic or allied-nation anode supply chains. Implementation details and product-level tariff rates vary.

The current graphite price is shown at the top of this page. Graphite has multiple price benchmarks: natural flake graphite (varying by purity and flake size), spheronized graphite (battery-anode-grade, commands premium), and synthetic graphite (premium battery anodes). Fastmarkets and Asian Metal publish widely-referenced regional prices.
