How manganese prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

South Africa, Gabon, and Australia dominate supply

South Africa ~35%, Gabon ~20%, Australia ~17%, China ~10%, Ukraine ~4%, India ~4%, other ~10%. South32's GEMCO (Groote Eylandt, Australia) is one of the world's largest and lowest-cost mines; it suffered significant disruption from Cyclone Megan in March 2024. Eramet's Comilog (Gabon) is the second-largest individual operation.

USGS · International Manganese Institute (IMnI)
Demand

Steel alloying dominates; battery demand is growing

Steel alloying (deoxidizer and strengthener) accounts for ~90% of manganese demand. Battery cathode demand (NMC, and especially LMFP which uses significant manganese) is growing from a small base (~6-8% of demand in 2025). China is both the dominant importer of ore and the dominant steel producer.

IMnI · Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
Policy and macro

Chinese steel output and cyclone disruptions are the near-term drivers

Chinese steel mill blast-furnace utilization is the dominant demand signal; when Chinese steel output falls, manganese ore demand and prices follow. Supply disruptions (GEMCO cyclone 2024, South African power issues) can spike prices sharply given the thin OTC market. Battery demand growth is the long-term secular driver.

Key market data

Manganese fundamentals

Annual Mine Supply
~20M t ore

Annual manganese ore production (gross weight) approximately 20 million tonnes. South Africa ~35%, Gabon ~20%, Australia ~17%, China ~10%. Contained manganese units are roughly 5-6M tonnes.

USGS · IMnI
Battery Cathode Demand
~6-8%

NMC cathodes (NCM622, NCM811) use manganese. LMFP (lithium manganese iron phosphate) is a new higher-energy LFP variant using more manganese per kWh. If LMFP gains significant market share it could materially lift manganese demand.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
South32 + Eramet Share
~35%

South32 (GEMCO) and Eramet (Comilog) together control roughly 30-35% of global seaborne manganese ore supply, making them the most influential pricing players outside China.

Company reports
Steel Demand Share
~90%

Steel alloying consumes roughly 90% of global manganese. Approximately 7-8kg of manganese per tonne of steel produced. Chinese steel output (1,000Mt/yr) is the dominant demand driver.

IMnI · World Steel Association
Top Producer Country
South Africa

South Africa (Kalahari Manganese Field) is the world's largest manganese producer and holds the world's largest known high-grade manganese reserves. South32 and Hotazel Manganese Mines (Assore) are the dominant operators.

USGS
Price Volatility (90-day)
~25%

Moderate-high volatility driven by Chinese import demand swings and periodic supply disruptions. The thin OTC market (no exchange futures) amplifies price moves on demand surprises.
