Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Australia and Brazil dominate seaborne supply

Australia (BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue) and Brazil (Vale) together supply roughly 75% of seaborne iron ore. Both countries have low-cost, large-scale operations. Simandou (Guinea), the first major new iron ore supply in decades, began first production in 2025 via the Rio Tinto + Chinalco/Baowu JV. Simandou's 60 Mt/yr at nameplate will be a meaningful new supply source by 2026-2027.

USGS · World Steel Association
Demand

China's steel sector is the demand engine

China produces roughly 55% of global crude steel and imports roughly 75% of seaborne iron ore. Chinese property starts, infrastructure spending, and steel mill margins are the primary demand signals. India is the fastest-growing secondary market, now the world's second-largest steel producer. China's steel exports hit record levels in 2024-2025, creating international trade tensions.

Policy and macro

China steel output and BHP-Anglo merger attempt set the narrative

China's property sector downturn (peak in 2021, extended trough through 2025) reduced construction-related steel demand. Infrastructure and automotive are partially offsetting. BHP's failed attempt to acquire Anglo American in mid-2024 ($49B, copper-driven) was the defining M&A event. CMRG (China Mineral Resources Group), the state centralized iron ore buyer, is reshaping pricing dynamics.

Iron Ore fundamentals

Annual Mine Production
~2.5Gt

Australia ~35%, Brazil ~25%, China ~15%, India ~8%, Russia ~5%. Seaborne trade is roughly 1.6Gt/yr. Quality matters: high-grade (65%+ Fe) commands a premium over standard 62% Fe.

USGS · World Steel Association
Annual Seaborne Trade
~1.6Gt

The seaborne market (Australia + Brazil to China/Japan/Korea) sets the spot price. China imports roughly 1.2Gt annually. Low-grade ore trade from smaller producers in Africa and Central Asia is growing.

UNCTAD · World Steel Association
China Crude Steel Output
~1,000Mt/yr

China produces roughly 55% of global crude steel. Monthly output data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and World Steel Association is the most-watched demand signal for iron ore.

60Mt/yr target

The largest greenfield iron ore project in decades. Rio Tinto 27% + Chinalco/Baowu JV. First production targeted 2025; 30-month ramp to 60Mt/yr (27Mt Rio share). High grade (~65% Fe) will compete with premium Australian products.

Price Volatility (90-day)
~28%

Iron ore is among the more volatile major commodities due to thin liquidity in futures relative to the physical market size and sensitivity to monthly Chinese steel output data.
